Unveiling the Enchanting Grendon Cottage: A Slice of Literary and Cinematic History

Since rebranding as Robinson & Hall Auctions earlier this year, our journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. We’ve held some of our biggest auctions this year, showcasing remarkable properties that tell unique stories. As auctioneers, we have the privilege of handling such an amazing variety of property, often quite unique.
In our February auction, one particular property was Grendon Cottage in Grendon Underwood, near Aylesbury. A ‘chocolate box’ thatched roof cottage with an illustrious history. It was once the beloved home of the mother of none other than the world-renowned author Roald Dahl. This charming cottage which Dahl refers to as ‘Mama’s Cottage’, held countless stories and enchanting memories.
As fate would have it, Grendon Cottage found its new owner in the form of a devoted Dahl enthusiast who wrote a book in his unique style. You can find ‘When Harry Met Saffy: The Start of Something Big’ on Amazon.
This serendipitous connection between the cottage and the Dahl legacy adds an even more endearing touch to the property. It’s as if the spirit of Dahl continues to reside within the thatched roof and timber beams, inspiring creativity in new and unexpected ways.
Grendon Cottage also had another famous occupant – the talented actress Elizabeth Spriggs. Her name may not be as instantly recognisable as Roald Dahl’s, but her work is etched in the chronicles of cinematic history. Elizabeth Spriggs graced the silver screen in movies such as Harry Potter, Sense & Sensibility and Midsomer Murders. The Dovecote in the front garden was a Midsomer Murders prop that Elizabeth saved.
To think that this cottage was once the home of such a talented actress is a testament to the charm and allure of Grendon Cottage. It has been a backdrop for creativity and inspiration, and its walls undoubtedly hold countless untold stories of those who walked through its doors.
